“If not for Osimhen, we wouldn’t be talking about the World Cup” – Mikel Obi
John Mikel Obi has offered glowing praise to Victor Osimhen, insisting that the Napoli striker was the reason Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes are still alive.
The former Super Eagles captain said Osimhen’s energy and determination turned the tide for the national team at a critical point in their campaign.

The striker who refused to let Nigeria fall
According to Mikel, Osimhen’s unforgettable hat-trick against Benin Republic was more than a show of skill, it was a statement of leadership.
The commanding 4–0 win, he said, was the spark that reignited Nigeria’s fading hopes.
“We owe that result to Victor,” Mikel reflected on his Obi One Podcast. “He carried the team on his shoulders when the pressure was enormous. That’s what true leaders do.”
Mikel added that Osimhen’s performance underlined what the Super Eagles had been missing, a player who combines courage, passion, and the will to fight for every ball.
What happens when Osimhen is missing
The ex-Chelsea midfielder drew attention to Nigeria’s poor record without their number nine. Matches played in Osimhen’s absence, Mikel noted, exposed the team’s struggle for rhythm and creativity.
“Four draws and one loss tell you everything,” he said. “Without him, we lose our attacking identity. His presence brings confidence, to the team and to the fans.”
Mikel warned that the Super Eagles must find ways to perform better collectively, rather than relying solely on one player, no matter how talented he is.
Looking beyond individual brilliance
As Nigeria prepares for the World Cup playoffs, Mikel urged the squad to replicate Osimhen’s spirit across every department.
He described the striker as “the heartbeat” of the team but reminded others that qualification demands unity and consistency.
“Football is a team sport,” he stressed. “Victor can’t do everything alone. We all need to show the same hunger he shows every match.”
The veteran concluded by calling for focus, discipline, and faith, noting that Osimhen’s example should inspire the team to believe again.
