Bundesliga: Boniface reacts to manager’s criticism with “step by step” message
Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface has broken his silence following recent public criticism from Werder Bremen head coach Horst Steffen, sharing a message that hinted he’s a work in progress.
The Nigerian striker, who joined Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen during the 2025 summer transfer window, posted a short message on his Instagram story reading, “Step by step,” accompanied by a photo of himself in training.
Steffen’s Harsh words spark reaction
Steffen has been vocal about Boniface’s performances this season, openly questioning his tactical discipline and attacking output.
After Bremen’s 3-0 loss to Freiburg on Matchday 4, the coach criticized the forward for straying too wide on the pitch.

“He was too everywhere for me. He should definitely be more centrally located. It wasn’t how I wanted it,” Steffen said, as quoted by OneFootball
Following the 1-1 draw against Mainz 05, Steffen again expressed frustration over Boniface’s limited impact, stating:
“He tried to hold onto the ball up front. Today I thought to myself: come on, he can do even better.”
The comments have sparked mixed reactions among fans, with some calling for patience as the Nigerian adjusts to a new system and recovers full match sharpness.
Slow start at Bremen
Boniface arrived at Bremen with a strong reputation after being named Bundesliga Rookie of the Year at Leverkusen. However, he has struggled to replicate that form, managing only one assist in seven league appearances so far and no goals.
Sources close to the club suggest that fitness challenges, tactical adaptation and the team’s inconsistent form have slowed his progress.
