Luis Suarez, a forward for Inter Miami, has expressed regret for his actions after spitting at a member of the Seattle Sounders’ coaching staff after his team lost 3-0 in the Leagues Cup final.
“It was a moment of great tension and frustration, where right after the match things happened that shouldn’t have happened, but that doesn’t justify the reaction I had,” he said to Instagram.
“I was wrong and I sincerely regret it.” The altercation, which was started by the Uruguayan and involved both sets of players, took place just after the final whistle.
Before teammate Sergio Busquets hit the Mexico international on the chin, Suarez seized Sounders player Obed Vargas by the neck.
Shortly after, the 38-year-old got into a fight with a Sounders employee and was restrained by teammate Oscar Ustari before he seemed to spit in the coach’s face.
I regret what transpired, and I didn’t want to pass up the chance to own up to my mistakes and offer my apologies to everyone I offended,” Suarez continued.
Suarez stated that he wants to support Inter Miami’s attempt to qualify for the MLS Cup play-offs, despite speculation on the severity of any punishment he would get.
“We know there’s still a lot of the season ahead, and we’re going to work together to achieve the successes that this club and all of its fans deserve,” he stated. Suarez has experienced controversy before.
Throughout his career, the former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid striker has been a part of a number of contentious events.
Suarez received an eight-match suspension while at Liverpool in 2011 after being found guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra, a full-back for Manchester United.
Additionally, he was banned for three different instances of biting while playing for Uruguay, Liverpool, and Ajax.
